Early Warning Signs of IMHA in Dogs
This is Stella. Before January 11, 2019, she was a picture of health, full of life and energy. But then, something changed. The first warning signs of IMHA appeared: Stella wouldn’t eat, and her walk seemed off. Our first visit to the vet didn’t provide the answers we sought. They suspected a back problem, but the symptoms suggested otherwise.
Emergency IMHA Diagnosis and Treatment
Just days later, Stella’s condition deteriorated rapidly - she could barely walk. We rushed her to an emergency veterinary hospital. That’s when we received the diagnosis: Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Stella’s blood count had dropped to dangerous levels, requiring immediate emergency intervention through blood transfusion.
Managing IMHA with Medication
The following days were critical in Stella’s IMHA treatment journey. Her medical protocol included:
- Regular veterinary monitoring
- Prednisone therapy (a powerful steroid for IMHA management)
- Careful observation of vital signs
- Gradual strength rebuilding
Complications and Additional Challenges
Our IMHA journey faced an additional challenge when a blood clot formed at Stella’s catheter site, leading to necrosis - a known complication in IMHA cases. After careful consideration with our veterinary team, limb amputation became necessary for Stella’s survival.
Life After IMHA: Recovery and Hope
Today, Stella’s IMHA is in remission - a testament to successful treatment and ongoing management. She’s adapted remarkably to life on three legs and maintains her vibrant spirit. Despite all the challenges, she remains playful and full of life.
Living with IMHA: Impact on Pet Parents
This battle with canine IMHA has been challenging on multiple levels:
- Financial aspects of ongoing treatment
- Emotional toll of critical care decisions
- Daily management of medications and care
- Regular veterinary monitoring
Yet, Stella’s resilience and unwavering spirit kept us going. We’re grateful for each day we get to spend with her. This journey has been a powerful lesson in resilience, love, and the importance of cherishing each moment with our pets.
